Old Forest

This photo series is part of a long-term personal project to explore the life of the old forest. Too much old forest has been cut down in Finland, and the trend shows no signs of slowing.

With my photos, I want to show what an ancient forest, an essential home for many endangered species, looks like.

Many species that depend on old forests for survival suffer because too few old forests are left. Cultivated woods, where the trees are young and all the same, cannot provide the same protection and resources as old forests.

This black-and-white photograph depicts a majestic birch tree standing tall against the chill of winter.

The graphic quality of the image emphasizes the tree's monumentality, reminiscent of ancient woodland guardians.
