reindeer herding- fence work
I had the opportunity to spend a few days with the local herders in the Pöyrisjärvi wilderness area. Their herding area is located beside the Norwegian border. During the winter they have to keep the border fence clean from the rime and raise the fence so that reindeers cannot run to Norway. Heavy rime will break the fence and without rise reindeers could go over. Nowadays reindeer herding is obliged to happen inside of the state borders. **
Herders have modern houses in the nearest village, but they use wilderness cabins where to stay one or two weeks at the time. Most of the wilderness cabins have an electric generator. Some of them have satellite TV and even Playstation. The weather might be so bad that you can't out of the cabin for days, so it's nice to have some entertainment. I think it's nice how old traditions mix up with the modern technology. Herders also use drones a lot as it helps with herding and in some cases saves a lot time and gasoline.
